An interview with Childhood
At Primavera Sound we were lucky enough to bump into Childhood right after their performance. Our chat turned out to be filled with LOLZ.
If you’re not familiar with the band, here’s a teaser:
Where in London are you from?
We’re from south and southwest London, Brixton, Hammersmith all over.
When you listen to your own music, is it different from when you started?
Ben: Yes definitely! The sound is evolving within the same idea that we started with. Loads of nostalgia, melody etc. That’s what we always wanted to do and there’s so much scope investigating that with different sounds and different styles.
Jonny: In our next album we make, the sound is more focused than before. It’s more like what we want to sound like now, rather than what we think we should sound like or have sounded like before.
Did you get some help from a producer or did you get to this sound yourself?
Ben: It’s an evolution of meeting new people. We started out as a two-piece. It was just me and Leo, now Thomas, Jonny and Max have joined. The ideas remain the same and we still try to create the same kind of feeling.
Is it your first time in Barcelona?
Second time as a band, we played in Sala Apolo before. We played a really good show on Halloween. We had no idea Spanish people liked us, but apparently they did. As soon as we finished playing, this huge Halloween party started, we were going to leave but everyone was dressed up and it was pretty cool.
Are you going to have some time to enjoy the city?
Last time we were literally here for 16 hours, but this time we have an apartment and we’re staying a few days. We’re not doing that many festivals this summer so might as well stay and enjoy.
Who are you going to see here at Primavera Sound?
All: Spiritualized, Mac DeMarco, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Young Husbands, Interpol… We played with Interpol before and we loved it. We want to see what they have been doing, we’re big fans.
How is it to play with a band that is so well-known internationally?
Jonny: Personally I learned a bit from them, it was an inspiration.
Leo: It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to play with a band that you respect very highly.
Tell us a bit about London, what’s your favourite place?
Ben: My favourite place in London is Morley’s chicken shop which is exclusively found all over south London
Jonny: They do really good wings, it’s like 4 for £1
Ben: If you know the guy you get 6! With chips!
An insiders tip for the Tune Munch readers!
Jonny: Or in Bethnal Green, there’s E Pellicci’s.
Leo: In Hammersmith, Sam’s chicken
We second Sam’s chicken. It’s clean.
Ben: Yeah it is clean. It’s gone a bit arrogant.
What have you guys eaten here in Barcelona? Fried chicken or are you having a bad time?
Jonny: So far I had a little square of Quiche
Ben: I had a Pret a Manger sandwich which I saved from London. It was an egg sandwich. Bad news. We left London at 4 AM this morning.
Jonny: We’re pretty tired right now
What’s coming up for Childhood?
Ben: New record in the new year! Early next year! We’re in the process of creating and recording it right now. After we leave this festival we are going away to France to Thomas’ home town in Normandy to write a lot of it.
That’s pretty close, will you be swimming across?
Ben: Yes, we’ll be swimming on the boat
Your dream gig: Who is playing before you, where are you playing?
Ben: Before us would play Shuggie Otis. Actually, no because I would have to follow that. Maybe it would be my dad. His band is great! I’ve seen him so many times that I have to blow him off the stage now.
Jonny: After us a 3D Marvin Gaye
Ben: And it will be at the Brixton Academy
And where is the After Party?
At Morley’s chicken!
What’s the last thing you want to say to our Tune Munch readers?
Ben: We’d say.. Keep on trying to listen to our music, even if you don’t like it.
Jonny: Keep trying, you will find something you like on there somewhere.
A joy speaking with these lads. Childhood’s album “Lacuna” is available on iTunes, or listen to it on Spotify
They will be playing at Wonderland Festival in Amsterdam on the 29th of August 2015.
