An interview with Cairobi

We already wrote about Cairobi recently, but tonight in Camden we got to hear them at first hand. Because we didn’t know much about them yet, we thought a chat would be appropriate. We spoke with Giorgio from Italy (Guitar and voice), Salvador from Mexico (Keys), Stefan from Austria (guitar), Alessandro from Italy (bass) and Aurelien from France (drums). The band introduced each other with a great imitation of each other’s accents.

Tune Munch: Last time we saw an image of you guys you all had short hair, now one of you has very long hair, what happened in the meantime?

Giorgio: We’ve actually been playing for a long time, but at first it was just for fun. We played in pubs and had quite a few gigs in London but the set up was very small. We changed drummer in the meantime (now Aurelien, TM) and since we have become more serious.

TM: Do you practice a lot or do you go from gig to gig?

Giorgio & Stefan: We don’t practice a lot but when we do it’s very intense. Sometimes we practise for 10 hours. We’ll rehearse a lot to put the set together and now we just rehearse before a gig.

TM: Who writes the songs?

Giorgio: That would be me.

TM: What do you use to achieve the sound effects for your voice?

Giorgio: I add some delay and also use a pitch shifter.

TM: So you are from all over the place, how did you meet? Are you a gumtree brand?

Stefan: Not at all! We did meet online though…

TM: On tinder?

Stefan: We were on a date… just joking. actually Giorgio, Salvador and me studied music together.

TM: What’s coming up next for Cairobi?

Giorgio: We’re playing at some festivals, Great escape, Dot to Dot festival and some other gigs.

TM: Are you guys still unsigned as your Facebook page says?

Giorgio: Well… we’re a little bit signed. We’re talking to some labels about the album, basically it’s all done, we’re just waiting to release. We just released the EP “Distant Fire” last week so it’s going well.

TM: Do all of you live in London

Stefan: Three of us live in Berlin

TM: How do you practice?

Stefan: You know… Skype *wink*. We actually practice together in London or in Berlin.

Aurelien: We’ll have intensive sessions together and it works for us. You need to be together to get the vibe.

TM: If you could change one thing, what would it be?

Stefan: I’d like to be taller than Salvador.

Giorgio: Same here.
